HSWC Receives Grant for Innovative Dog ProgramIn September of 2009 Humane Society of Waupaca County received a grant that allowed a wonderful new world to open to the dogs at the Humane Society.Adoption Readiness Training Program was created and put into motion. The goal of the program is to create an assessment system that helps summarize a dogs temperament as well as skill level. Once identified, the dogs then are placed into a training program to introduce, refine and manage behaviors to make them a better canine companion. The program completes full circle by offering a free Great Start Training Workshop to get a summary of the information for the adopters once they have selected a dog to take home. This program is designed to address the three vital interaction points with each dog on a daily basis. Contact Point One: The staff of HSWC have been introduced to THE THIRD WAY belief systems and are handling the dogs daily to promote consistency in interaction. Many of the staff are currently experiencing THE THIRD WAY by attending a training course with their personal dogs to witness the results for themselves. Contact Point Two: Volunteer Dog Walkers are being introduced to THE THIRD WAY and are extending the handling skills to behaviors when out on walks. Contact Point Three: Highly trained volunteers are now being trained and mentored to be able to spend one on one time in a systematic approach of working with each dog. This is were the dogs are taught, (or re-taught) basic skills such as eye contact, leash manners, sit maintain, down maintain and the like. Our goal is to have 12 volunteers in this critical and life changing role. This group is called The Training Core. We are currently looking for more individuals with a passion for learning and changing lives. Please contact the Humane Society if you are interested in participating.
